The meeting was opened by Chairperson, Sandra Nelson at 5:00 p.m. Lt. Terry Parish, District Commander of the Rincon District of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department was introduced. He first outlined the huge territory his district encompasses – Mt. Lemmon to Benson, Campbell from mountain to mountain. A data sheet of criminal activity in the SAC area for the past 3 months (22 offenses) and the past 6 months (43 offenses) was handed out plus a map of the Sunrise Association Council area.
Lt. Parish stated that the Pima County Sheriff’s Domestic Violence program serves as a model for other law enforcement departments. He stressed the use of common sense to keep you and your property safe: Lock your doors, keep the garage door down, lock your car when away from home and don’t leave a purse in the front seat. Fraud, whether in person, by phone or online is prevalent. Do not pay for services with a prepaid gift card. Legitimate services will never ask for money on the phone.
The Sheriff’s Department offers many services including “Missionary Policing Project” which means a homeowner who plans to be gone for any length of time can request drive by services. A Neighborhood Resource Guide (58 pages) was handed out. Anyone wishing additional copies can pick them up at the Rincon District Office. Lt. Parish closed by leaving his personal cell number (465-7647) volunteering his availability.
SAC BUSINESS: Tiny Read, representing SNAP, handed out the March 2016 announcement of the Annual Home/Garden & Treasures Tour, the Caregiver Support Group and information about the final two Senior Living Education Programs.
COMMUNITY RESOURCES: Roger Wiswell sent the following via email: “Our March 12th Adopt-a-Road event went very well. We had plenty of people including some new participants from various Sunrise Association communities. As a result, every Fairfield county road was covered. Please extend my thanks to SAC Presidents and Representatives for getting the word out and for their participation.” Well done!
COUNTY LIAISON: Pam Negri announced the following:
- Nothing in Supervisor Miller’s recent newsletters of specific interest for Fairfield.
- The County DOT has issued a work order to spray extensive fountain grass growing on both sides of Tanuri when the plants are actively growing and green in the spring or early summer. Recent utility work on the west side of Tanuri eliminated some Fountain grass, but significant growth remains.
- DOT confirmed that the County planted fountain grass growing on the slopes along Sunrise between Kolb & Craycroft in 1980’s to stabilize the soil. Discussions with the DOT continue as to how the fountain grass can be eradicated while maintaining soil stability. This is important because Fountain grass on these slopes is spreading into the HOAs and their arroyos, which abut Sunrise. Most plausible and least expensive recommendation from natural resource specialists and soil engineers is to spray the fountain grass, leave the roots in place, install netting, and later reseed with native grass. I know that Sunrise Ridge & Sunrise Mountain View abut Sunrise Dr. What other HOAs do?
- Feel free to contact me if you have questions about invasive grasses, the threat they pose and how to eradicate them. I brought copies of the County brochure: Wanted: Buffelgrass (and fountain grass) Dead & Gone for anyone who did not receive a copy at our prior meeting. I can also arrange for an expert speaker presentation to your Board or homeowners about invasives.
